Pacific Pocket Mouse
By Matt Reuter
The Pacific pocket mouse lives among the coastal sage scrub of southern California. The species was thought to be entirely extinct in the 1980s until it was rediscovered in 1993. I wanted to create a design that emphasized how easy it is for us to overlook or lose track of such a small creature. The burrows the Pacific pocket mouse dig help to hydrate native plants, and they also disperse seeds throughout their ecosystem. These little actions help to keep the larger landscape thriving.
